Chinese military researchers have inserted tardigrade DNA into human embryonic stem cells, claiming it could make humans more resistant to extreme radiation.
Using CRISPR, scientists transferred tardigrade genes that produce protective proteins into human cells, allowing them to survive lethal X-ray exposure while continuing to grow normally.
Tardigrades, also called water bears, are renowned for surviving boiling water, freezing temperatures, and even space.
The study suggests this genetic boost could one day help create soldiers able to withstand nuclear fallout, though the experiment raises major safety and ethical concerns.
