Southern dogtrot cabins
Dogtrot houses are an iconic American architectural style that originated in the Southern United States in the 19th century. They are characterized by a large, open breezeway running through the center of a one-story home, dividing it into two separate living areas. The name "dogtrot" may come from the idea that dogs would trot through the breezeway to cool off.
Breezeway:
The central breezeway provided airflow and a cooler, covered area to sit.
Rooms:
The two separate living areas typically flank the breezeway and are 18–20 feet wide.
Porch:
Dogtrot houses often have a wide front porch that spans the entire length of the house.
Construction:
Built before air conditioning, dogtrot houses were often raised off the ground and traditionally built as log cabins.
