Kai — The 9-Day-Old Warrior
On October 7, 2023, as Hamas terrorists stormed Kibbutz Nirim, baby Kai was just 9 days old.
Terrorists set his family’s home on fire. Inside the safe room, Kai’s parents, Aimee and Uriel, his grandmother, and their newborn were trapped. The air quickly filled with thick, black, toxic smoke.
There was no ventilation, no electricity, no air conditioning, and no way out. The door stayed locked to keep the terrorists out, and the window had to remain sealed… but Kai was suffocating. His tiny body was struggling for air.
In the testimony given by Kai’s grandmother, the moment about the window is one of the most haunting yet heroic parts of their survival story. Here’s what happened in detail:
Inside the mamad, surrounded by smoke and fear, Kai’s parents made a desperate decision to save their newborn.
Every few minutes, when they sensed it was quiet outside, they would lift Kai up to the small window. They cracked it open just slightly — enough for him to take a few gulps of fresh air. Then they would close it quickly, terrified the terrorists would hear them or see movement.
They repeated this again and again for hours, timing each moment carefully between noises outside.
His grandmother later said this act — risking detection every time — saved Kai’s life. Without those precious breaths of fresh air, he wouldn’t have survived six hours of breathing toxic smoke in that tiny sealed room.
After eight endless hours of terror, they finally heard voices in Hebrew: Israeli forces had arrived. The rescuers took Kai out first. He was rushed to the hospital, where he spent three days on oxygen — but he survived.
Today, Kai is a healthy, thriving, smiling boy. His name, Kai, means “warrior” — and after what he endured, it couldn’t be more fitting.
Kai’s story is one of love, resilience, and hope in the face of unimaginable horror.
