The Children of August 1929 – Hanna and Mordechai
At noon, terrifying screams shattered the air. From the village of Kolonia, Arabs burst out like desert savages, their faces burning with hatred, thirsting for blood.
They stormed into the Maklef family home in the Jewish villaga Motza.
Little Hanna and Mordechai, just 11 and 9 years old, huddled in a corner of the balcony, paralyzed by fear. Around them echoed the final cries of their parents, their sisters Mina and Rebecca, and their brother Moshe - as they were slaughtered with swords before their very eyes.
The leader of the rioters was none other than the family’s shepherd.
But at that moment, their older brother, Haim Maklef - only 18 years old - saw the mob rushing toward the house. He sprinted for help, but when he returned, it was already too late. With only a rifle in his hands, he fired and managed to kill one attacker. Then the rifle jammed. Desperate, he fought with the butt of the weapon, swinging it wildly at the bloodthirsty rioters.
Amid the chaos, he screamed at his younger siblings:
“Jump! Jump out the window!”
Mordechai and Hanna leapt. Together they ran to the stable, escaping on the family’s mare while knives slashed at their legs. By a miracle, they survived.
Haim - the true hero of that night -saved his brother and sister, but he carried the scars forever. Put on trial by the British for killing an Arab, he gave heartbreaking testimony. Yet no court could ease his torment. For the rest of his life, he was haunted by the nightmares - by the vision of his parents and siblings butchered, tortured, desecrated in their own home.
Mordechai, the boy who escaped the massacre, grew up to become Chief of Staff of the IDF at only 32 years old. He helped establish Unit 101, led by Ariel Sharon, and laid the foundations of Israel’s modern infantry doctrine.
But no greatness could erase the blood-soaked memories of August 1929.
Lieutenant General Mordechai Maklef died in 1978, at only 58 years old.
His sister Hanna passed away at 54.
And Haim -the savior brother -lived with nightmares until his last breath.
The massacre of Motza, 90 years ago, was not just another pogrom.
It was part of the endless war against the Jewish people, fueled from the heart of Jerusalem, from the Temple Mount itself.
And the cries of the children of 1929 still echo today.
