For DECADES Putin has had a red line. That Ukraine Never becomes part of NATO. After the Wall fell and the Warsaw Pact disbanded NATO was not suppose to expand and grow to the East as there would be no need and as Reagan and Gorbachev had an "understanding". Yet NATO has done nothing but expand and grow eastward. Ukraine is HUGE and was in Russia's mind to be the Last buffer state to having NATO directly on it's border. The Biden Admin was supportive of Ukraine joining NATO. that was the last straw and Russia attacked. This does not make the action right or Putin not "evil". but it is key to understand what might end the war.
