In response, the local Islamic center wrote a letter of support for Dirie, claiming his presence “enriches the lives of those around him” and that his crime of raping a child was caused by “the challenge of starting over in a new culture.”After this endorsement, Dirie received a more lenient sentence that could put him back on the streets in less than eight years.
