Breaking News: A 7-billion-year-old ball of ice has just entered our Solar System.
Astronomers have detected a mysterious interstellar ice-rich object called 3I/ATLAS. This object may be a comet over 7 billion years old, even older than our 4.5-billion-year-old Solar System.
Its hyperbolic orbit, originating in the thick disk of the Milky Way, far above the galactic plane, confirms its interstellar origin.
Spotted by Chile's ATLAS telescope some 670 million km from the Sun, 3I/ATLAS is thought to be rich in water ice. When the Sun warms it in late 2025, astronomers expect the comet to develop a bright head and tail. This head and tail could be larger and more active than previous visitors like ʻOumuamua and Borisov.
This discovery confirms predictive models that suggest many more interstellar objects await discovery by new observatories like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. By capturing 3I/ATLAS, scientists have obtained a rare time capsule from an era before our own, a direct look at ancient matter that has drifted through the galaxy for billions of years.
