This is just WOW!!!
When visiting the grave of Jonathan Edwards, I noticed everything was written in Neo-Latin. Here is what it says:
“To the memory of the most Reverend Man, Jonathan Edwards, A.M., President of the College of New Jersey.
Born at Windsor, in Connecticut, on the 5th of October, A.D. 1703, son of the Reverend Timothy Edwards; educated at Yale College.
Ordained to the sacred ministry at Northampton on the 15th of February, 1726–27.
Dismissed from there on the 22nd of June, 1750, and took up the mission of instructing the Native Americans.
Appointed President of Nassau Hall (Princeton University) on the 16th of February, 1758.
Died in this village (Princeton) on the 22nd of March following, in the 55th year of his age, alas, too short!
Here lies the mortal part.
What sort of man do you seek, traveler?
A man tall in body, but slender;
Most intent upon study, marked by abstinence and diligence, attentiveness.
In acuteness of intellect, sharp judgment, and prudence second to none among mortals.
Distinguished in knowledge of the liberal arts and sciences, foremost among sacred critics, an outstanding theologian, such that scarcely another equal can be found.
A candid debater; a mighty and unconquerable defender of the Christian faith.
A grave, serious, and discerning preacher by the grace of God, exceedingly successful.
Eminent in piety, strict in his own conduct, yet just and kind to others.
He lived beloved and revered
But, ah! he died mourned.
What sighs did his departure evoke!
Alas for such wisdom! Alas for such learning and godliness!
The college laments its loss, the Church mourns too;
But Heaven rejoices at his reception.
Go, traveler, and follow his pious footsteps.”
