In July 1970, George Peppard stepped off a helicopter into the stifling heat of United States Army Camp Holloway in Pleiku, Vietnam.
A Hollywood star known for his roles in films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Carpetbaggers, Peppard was no stranger to courage, having served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps in the late 1940s.
Though he narrowly missed combat in World War II and Korea, his time in uniform left a lasting mark—a deep respect for those who served.
Driven to honor the men and women sacrificing in Vietnam, many feeling forgotten back home, Peppard traveled solo and at his own expense, spending two weeks meeting over 5,000 service members.
A-Team co-star Mr. T later recalled a moment on set: “He had a distant, blank look on his face during a flashback scene. When I asked if he was okay, all he said was, ‘I wish I had done more. I wish I had done more.’”
That quiet regret spoke volumes about Peppard’s heart—a man who carried the weight of those he met in Vietnam long after he returned.
