Hauling water in Port Isabel circa 1905. You may be curious re: the position of the man on the donkey and his lack of reigns. This is typically how little donkeys and burros are ridden. It is easier on the animal. Better weight distribution. The forequarters carry the weight of the barrel drag and the hindquarters (which are stronger) carry the weight of the rider. A well-trained animal will respond to voice commands, so there's no need for reins.
