In 1776 these men, and many others, signed a document that was committing treason against the British Crown, the Declaration of Independence.
These men understanding that if caught they would be sentenced to death, stood up for the idea of what they thought a country could be.
In the process of this revolution, James Madison, our future 4th President helped write the Constitution and wrote the Bill of Rights. These documents which still stand strong today represent the freedoms that we have as Americans, and the Anable rights that have been given to us by God.
Our future 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson, along with the help of a few others wrote one of, if not the most important document in world history, The Declaration of Independence.
This document, which claimed our independence away from the British crown and away from King George gave us the freedom to run our own country.
But, there was one problem, this had never been done before, and ultimately if this document were to be signed the United Kingdom surely would declare war on this experiment of a Republic.
Understanding the risks, and the consequences if they failed, these men, among others gathered on July 4th of 1776 and adopted this declaration. Later on August 2nd of 1776 they signed their names on the Declaration of Independence. This act did cause the British crown to declare war, and these men did not back down, instead they fought the largest and most powerful army in the world’s history, and ultimately they won there, and our freedom.
These men were not perfect men buy any measure, but they understood something that not many men do. They understood that in order to have a great country there has to be freedom, freedom from the government most of all.
Everything we have today in this great country we owe to these men, and to the fight that they were willing to fight. They risked it all so that we, 249 years later, could be free!
Today we honor the men that were willing to stand up and declare independence 249 years ago today. We celebrate the freedoms that we now hold because of that Declaration of Independence. And today we thank God that we DON’T HAVE TO DRINK TEA ANYMORE!!!
In the words of our first President, George Washington. "Real men despise battle, but will never run from it"
God Bless the United States of America!
