Sweden initially played a peripheral role in the rescue of Jews. The country only admitted 2,000 German-Jewish refugees between 1933 and 1940. A year later Sweden accepted all asylum seekers when 5,000 Danish Jews and 1,500 Jewish refugees in Denmark faced deportation.
