A new electric jet engine prototype just hit 1,340 mph — faster than the speed of sound
A Chinese research team has unveiled a breakthrough electric jet propulsion system that may redefine flight. Their prototype, built with plasma-powered air compression and magnetically driven exhaust, just exceeded Mach 1 in controlled tests — breaking the sound barrier without using a single drop of fuel.
The design works on a principle called magnetoplasmadynamic thrust. Instead of burning fuel to create pressure, it ionizes air particles using high-voltage electricity and shoots them out at immense speed. The result? Jet-level power, zero emissions.
In the test tunnel, the engine produced supersonic air blasts and lifted itself using only ambient air and electric power. It’s not just a laboratory trick — the components are scalable, and if developed further, this could mean silent, fast, fuel-free aviation.
One of the biggest problems in air travel is emissions. Aircraft contribute heavily to global warming, but battery-powered planes struggle with range. This engine offers an alternative path — fast, clean, and possibly unlimited if paired with renewable energy.
This could unlock a future where planes fly not just cleaner, but cheaper. No fuel, no combustion, no pollution — just pure electromagnetic force driving air through a new kind of sky highway.
Electric cars changed the roads. Electric jets might just change the skies
