Petty Officer Gary Rehm Jr. was known as "Uncle Gary" on the USS Fitzgerald. He mentored younger sailors, offered advice, and treated them like family. On June 17, 2017, when a massive cargo ship slammed into the Fitzgerald, sailors were trapped in their bunks as the water rushed in. Gary didn't think twice. He dove into the flooding compartment over and over, dragging men out of the chaos. He saved at least 20 lives. He went in one last time and never returned. Gary could have saved himself but he picked his family over his own life. Rest easy Hero 🇺🇸
