Sammy Davis Jr. actually lost his left eye in a car accident on November 19, 1954.
While driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in his Cadillac, Davis collided with another car at high speed near San Bernardino, California. He had been trying to make a sharp turn at an intersection and crashed into a vehicle backing out of a driveway. The car's steering wheel, which had a decorative horn button shaped like a bullet, struck Davis in the face during the collision, severely injuring his left eye.
Doctors attempted to save the eye, but it was beyond repair and had to be removed. Davis was fitted with a glass eye, which he wore for the rest of his life.
