On this day in Appalachian history the Great Smokey Mountain National Park was born. On June 15, 1934 over 210K acres of Appalachian beauty became the first park to be partially funded by the Federal Government.
FDR dedicated it in 1940, and today it sees 12 million annual visitors. The park has 800+ miles of hiking, with unique wildlife, and a conservation of the culture that makes it one of the most sought out destinations in Appalachia!
