The town of Sainte-Mère-Église erected a statue honouring Private John Steele whose parachute got famously snagged on their church spire during Operation Overlord and which was represented in the excellent WW2 drama about the 1944 D-Day landings.
THE LONGEST DAY (1962)
They show the film in the town square regularly in June. It was filmed in Villedieu des Poeles further south as St Mere got a thumping. But they also welcomed troops with churns of milk in 1944.
Played by Red Buttons in a film always worth watching come 6 June. The British, the Canadians, French Resistance, the Aussies, & of course we Yanks, all part of the Greatest Generation the world has ever known.
