"The light that stayed" part 2
Tears blurred his eyes. “Papa.” It was the first time someone had called him that. His heart swelled and shattered all at once.
“I was just telling her to wake up,” she said with a smile.
He smiled back—just for a moment.
Suddenly, the monitor screamed. A flatline. Chaos. Doctors rushed in.
“Sara!” he cried.
Raja clung to his leg, crying. They were pushed out.
Time slowed in the waiting room. Minutes felt like eternities. Finally, a doctor came out, weary and pale.
“She’s in surgery... we’re doing everything we can. We just have to pray.”
The days that followed were a blur of pain and waiting. They wouldn't let him see her. No updates. Just silence.
But Raja stayed.
She’d sneak into his room, hold his hand while he slept, just as he had held Sara’s. Her presence was the only warmth in those long, cold hours.
Then—days later—news came. Sara was stable. She might make it.
He was allowed in again. This time, hope returned. Slowly. Cautiously. And always, Raja was there, like a little clock made of love.
Until one day, she wasn’t.
He asked. No one knew.
Three days passed. Then finally—Sara opened her eyes.
His heart exploded with joy. He wept, hands trembling as he pressed his face to her chest.
“You came back,” he whispered.
She nodded faintly, tears slipping down her cheeks.
And then he told her about Raja. About the nights she held her hand. About the way she called them Mommy and Papa. About the light she brought into their darkness.
Sara smiled weakly. “I felt her,” she whispered. “Even in the dark... I felt her.”
It took two long months of pain and therapy, but Sara finally walked out of the hospital.
Adam stood waiting.
He wasn’t alone.
And as Sara stepped into the sun, a little girl ran into her arms, holding her so tight it was as if she’d waited her whole life.
“Mommy,” Raja whispered.
Sara knelt down, hugged her close, and this time—this time—she didn’t let go.
