#OnThisDay
May 13, 1607:
After landing at Jamestown, Virginia settlers attend their first prayer service. Their Anglican chaplain, Rev. Robert Hunt, fashions a makeshift church by nailing a beam between two trees and stretching sailcloth overhead. Despite hunger, disease, and internal conflict, Hunt encourages the weary colonists, declaring, “We do well to praise God in this wilderness.”
