Harvey Ball was born on this day, July 10, in 1921. In 1963, Ball was paid $45 to create a smiley face for the State Mutual Life Assurance Company. “I made a circle with a smile for a mouth on yellow paper,” he said, “because it was sunshiny and bright.”
