Bologna is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its liberation by the Polish Army in the West.
The 55 000 soldiers of General Anders Polish II Corps fought their last battle of WW2 to liberate the city. 300 Polish soldiers were killed and 1200 wounded in the battles for the city and its surrounding areas.
After taking it, they raised the Polish flag from the highest tower of the city.
They were warmly welcomed by the Italians, who were glad that the German occupation was over.
Some local communists tried to put up communist flags in the city after its liberation, which angered the Polish soldiers who were nearly all from eastern Poland and had spent 1939-1941 in Soviet labor camps in Siberia.
They quickly tore down the communist flags and destroyed them.
