This true American hero and veteran is U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro, Jr. In 2005, Master Sgt. Del Toro was severely wounded when his Humvee hit an IED in Afghanistan. He suffered third-degree burns on more than 80% of his body, both his hands were seriously damaged, and he'd likely never walk or breathe on his own again. Doctors gave him a 15% chance survival, but Del Toro woke up from a three-month coma more determined to survive. Del Toro was then awarded the Bronze Star from Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Purple Heart after his injury and said his son, who was only two at the time, was his motivation to return to physical fitness. In 2010, he became the first airman with a 100% disability rating to re-enlist. In June 2020, he was refused entry on a base commissary because he wasn't wearing a mask due to the COVID-19 situation. When asked why he didn't have a mask, he replied: " I can't wear one because I lost my ears and fingers in the line of duty." The base commander was made aware of the incident and quickly apologized. 🫡
