#OnThisDay April 13, 1598: France's Henry IV signs the Edict of Nantes, granting substantial religious toleration and the full rights of citizens to the Huguenots (a Protestant group he once belonged to). The edict put a temporary end to the ferocious religious wars between Roman Catholics and Protestants which had torn France apart since the 1560s. The Huguenots retained the right to practice their religion until Louis XIV revoked the edict in 1685.
