#OnThisDay April 11, 1836: George Müller, leader in the Plymouth Brethren movement, opens his first orphanage on Wilson Street in Bristol. Relying solely on prayer rather than traditional fundraising, Müller’s faith-driven work would expand to care for over 2,000 children by 1875. George Müller was born in Prussia (now Germany) in 1805 and lived a life marked by significant transformation from a young man who was a thief, liar, and womanizer to a renowned Christian evangelist and director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. He is best known for his unwavering faith in God and his work with orphans, caring for 10,024 orphans during his lifetime and establishing 117 schools that provided Christian education to more than 120,000 students. Müller's orphanages continued to support over 100,000 orphans even after his death. He was also one of the founders of the Plymouth Brethren movement and later became a key figure in the Open Brethren group.
