I grew up with all the typical messages:
“You’re meant for more than just being a mom.”
“Don’t waste your potential on a family.”
“A career is where you’ll find yourself.”
And I believed it. Every bit of it. I went through school, work, life, chasing that elusive identity I was promised I’d find in titles, degrees, promotions, praise. But no one ever told me that kind of striving comes with a hollow echo. I was doing all the “right” things, yet I felt like a stranger in my own skin.
Then I became a mother.
And I was terrified. Not of the diapers or the sleepless nights, but of losing myself.
Because that’s what I was taught: that motherhood erases you. That if you pour into your children, there’s nothing left. That “just being a mom” is a kind of death.
But that’s the biggest lie I’ve ever swallowed.
Motherhood didn’t erase me. It revealed me.
The woman I was always meant to be, the one who could love beyond herself, who could slow down and nurture, who found peace in quiet places and power in small acts of service, she was there all along. I just couldn’t hear her over the noise of the world telling me to be everything else.
There is identity in motherhood. There is glory in it. Not the kind the world applauds, but the kind heaven notices.
And here’s the twist:
I thought giving myself to my children would shrink me, but somehow it’s grown me.
I thought I’d be bored, but I’ve been awakened.
I thought I’d lose my dreams, but I’ve just started dreaming differently.
We’ve been told that value comes from being seen, but motherhood teaches you that real value is often hidden. And sometimes the most important thing you’ll ever do is completely invisible to everyone else.
If you’re a mother wrestling with those same doubts, I want you to know, there’s no shame in feeling lost. But don’t look for yourself in a world that profits from your confusion. Come home. Get quiet. Let the work of your hands and the warmth of your children remind you of who you are.
You are not lesser.
You are not wasting your life.
You are not behind.
You are exactly where God designed you to be, raising souls, building eternity in small moments, and rediscovering a kind of joy that career could never give.
And that… is more than enough
