I remember having to write down detailed directions before driving somewhere new. And yes, buying maps. Hated driving in California because the maps could never keep up with their road construction and changes.

I had a large box of maps, I mapped our trips on motorcycles avoiding interstates as much as possible. Getting off the road before dark is a must with elk, moose, bears, and deer roaming around at dusk into the night.
