We honor and celebrate the extraordinary life and service of John Duffy, one of only 61 living Medal of Honor Recipients.
During a two day period in Vietnam, Duffy displayed exceptional gallantry and leadership while defending Fire Support Base Charlie against overwhelming enemy forces. Despite being wounded multiple times and refusing evacuation, he directed the base's defense, called in crucial airstrikes, organized evacuations under intense fire, and ensured the safety of wounded soldiers. He single-handedly coordinated air support, directed gunship fire, and led the final withdrawal, remaining the last man off the base. Even after an ambush during the evacuation, he organized defensive positions and ensured the safe extraction of his unit, demonstrating extraordinary heroism and selflessness throughout the ordeal.
