When the Nazis took over power in Germany in 1933, he - along with other Jewish players - was forbidden to compete.
After his father was incarcerated in Sachsenhausen camp in June 1938, his mother died of suicide. A few months later, after the November pogrom, Ernst and his younger siblings Alfred and Johanna fled to the Netherlands.
In July 1942, Ernst was deported from the German-occupied Netherlands to Auschwitz. He was registered with the no. 47100. He perished in the camp on 28 August 1942 at the age of 28.
