Jews were airlifted to Israel after being expelled from their homes in Yemen. Yemenite Jews are often referred to as "the most Jewish of Jews" due to the preservation of their ancient Jewish culture. They are also known for maintaining Hebrew in its most traditional form, Yemenite Hebrew. As of today, the UN reports that only one known Yemenite Jew is remaining in Yemen, Levi Marhabi. He was recently held as a prisoner by the Houthis, who tortured him severely, leading to the loss of all of his teeth and causing partial paralysis. Before this, thirteen Jews were expelled from Yemen by the Houthis as recently as 2021. Yemenite Jewish culture significantly influences Israeli culture today, particularly in dances and cuisine. Although Yemenite Jews are considered part of the Mizrahi Jewish group, they also represent a distinct community within this broader category. The history of Yemenite Jews is incredibly fascinating.
