Castle of Butrón in Bizkaia (Spain)
Butrón Castle is a neo-Gothic fortress of medieval origin.
The origins of the building date back to the Middle Ages, when there was a tower house belonging to the Butrón family, which was modified over the centuries and ended up disguised as a common farmhouse. Its current appearance is the result of a thorough remodelling carried out in the 19th century by the Marquis of Cubas.
Using the foundations and part of the existing cylindrical towers as a base, after removing the additions, the current castle was built combining, with a great deal of fantasy, different references to ancient buildings, in the style of the Bavarian castles of the 19th century, far from the prototypes of tower houses and castles typical of the region. The keep is similar to that of the Alcázar of Segovia.
