Radar, as a character, was inspired by Don Shaffer, who served with Dr. Richard Hornberger. Hornberger, under the pseudonym Richard Hooker, wrote M*A*S*H, the book, which spawned both the movie and the TV show. Shaffer, like the character, was born in Iowa and went by the nickname Radar during the Korean War.
