Serial killer Bela Kiss had a gruesome habit of pickling his victims in barrels stored in his basement. Authorities discovered his crimes, but by then he was fighting in World War I.
When they finally tracked him down, he had vanished, leaving a dead body in his hospital bed.
Rumors suggest he joined and later deserted the French Foreign Legion, with one possible sighting as a janitor in New York, though he disappeared before it could be confirmed.
It’s believed that in total he killed at least 23 people.
