A bit of history. My ex-husband’s paternal grandfather was the only newspaper vendor at the NJ entrance to the tunnel when it opened. He saw an opportunity and took it. As the story goes… they were penny papers at the time and when people paid with a nickel, he could ‘pop’ 4 pennies back to them without skipping a beat. It opened in 1937 and was originally called the Midtown Hudson Tunnel. People shortened that to the Midtown Tunnel and when my Dad took the tunnel in the 50s and early 60s it was still referred to as the Midtown Tunnel buy locals and regulars.
