The largest water evacuation in history happened on September 11, 2001. 150 private ships of all shapes, sizes, and purposes reported for duty to a radio call from United States Coast Guard in the aftermath of the attacks. The heroic captains transported about 500,000 people away from the disaster zone, opening the only way available to people in Lower Manhattan after all the tunnels were closed, and traffic fleeing Manhattan via bridges reached a standstill. This came to be known as the 9/11 Boat Lift.
