“Murder after the masquerade” Pavel Yakovlev, 1897. Masquerades were a popular entertainment in past centuries. They were originally held only at court, but later became more public. Anyone could get to a masquerade by buying a ticket. Women were sometimes admitted for free. Unfortunate. She was probably a victim of swindlers who did not want to pay for love for sale and preferred to simply get rid of an unwanted companion.
