"Road Hypnosis" is a state in which a person can drive unconsciously, immersed in his own thoughts.
The term first appears in a 1921 article describing the phenomenon of driving in a trance state, in which the driver looks at one point and appears to be mentally somewhere far away, yet performs all actions necessary for safe driving. "Road hypnosis" is a special case of automatism, a normal process peculiar to the brain.
