“Slave for Sale”

The heroine of the painting, a young slave girl is offered as a commodity in an oriental market. The fully naked girl, chastely lowering her head to hide her shame, sits on a rug. The sign on her chest is a price tag. It reads in Greek: “Rose, 18 years old, sold for 800 coins.” Behind her we see the feet of possible buyers crowding around her, contemplating her defenseless nakedness.
