Interesting moment in NYC history: 70 years ago today, a B-25 bomber traveling in dense fog, struck the Empire State Building on the 79th floor. Betty Lou Oliver was working on the 80th floor and survived the impact suffering burns and other injuries. EMS workers treated her and attempted to remove her via the elevator from the 75th floor when the weakened elevator cables snapped. The thousands of feet of cable coiled at the base of the shaft. That and rapid air compression are believed to cushion the free fall of Betty's elevator ride and... she survived! A feat that sits in the Guiness Book of Records.
