Nothing has been more destructive and toxic to marriage than the soulmate model of marriage.
The idea that marital love is solely determined and measured by a persons own personal and romantic feelings is truly toxic.
It puts the needs, feelings, desires, happiness of the individual front and center.
It assumes that love and marriage should always be easy, should always be accepting of everything, should never be hard, and if it ever becomes hard, if it ever struggles then that has to mean this person is not my soulmate after all. If ever the emotional connection, the flame, the over the top romantic feelings ever fade or change then this means it’s okay to move on and divorce.
Selfishness will never work in marriage, neither will self-centeredness. This line of thought is not only extremely childish, it’s not even grounded in reality. If you want your marriage to last then the last person you should be putting first is yourself.

I've been saying for years that there is no such thing as a "soulmate". It's a made-up fantasy. Fantasy is always better than reality. As you can imagine, not a popular opinion.... but, the truth rarely is. Many folks would rather live in a dream world....
Maybe someone can prove me wrong! 🙂
