In 1990, following Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, the Iraqi military stormed a camp housing British expatriates, abducting the male residents and transporting them to Iraq. Subsequently, a month later, the children of these detainees were also seized by Iraqi forces and relocated to Baghdad, housed in a well-maintained building under the guise of familial reunion. Contrary to the appearance of benevolence, Saddam's motives were strategic. Anticipating military intervention from Kuwait's allies, including the US and the UK, he intended to use the British captives as human shields to deter aerial bombardment. Additionally, Saddam aimed to manipulate these events for propaganda, showcasing the detainees on live television to suggest humane treatment. During a staged event, Saddam Hussein made a dramatic entrance into a room filled with the captives and their children. He singled out a 5-year-old boy, Stuart Lockwood, attempting to draw him into a televised publicity effort. Lockwood, however, visibly resisted Saddam's advances, maintaining a distance and refusing to comply with Saddam's request to sit on his lap. Despite Saddam's attempts to engage him in conversation through an interpreter, Lockwood remained unresponsive. The situation escalated when another child, in a bold act of defiance, kicked Saddam, leading to a tense moment where Saddam inquired about the child's parents, receiving no answer.
