On June 21, 1992, Vyacheslav Chornovil, leader of the People's Movement of Ukraine, convened the Pereyaslav Rada, where he broke the so-called Pereyaslav Agreement of 1654 between the Zaporizhzhia Army and Muscovy. Representatives of Cossack organizations gathered in the city. At the "Reunification Square," Chornovil was elected Hetman of Ukraine. "From now on, and as long as the sun shines over Ukraine, the old oath to the Czar of Moscow is no longer valid, because the Cossacks renounce it to swear an oath to serve our people faithfully, only to them and our native Ukraine, and not to spare our stomachs for the sake of its freedom, honor, and independence. У місто з'їхались представники козацьких організацій. На «майдані Возз'єднання» Чорновола обрали гетьманом України. "Відсьогодні і допоки сонце світить над Україною, стара присяга цареві московському не діє, бо козацтво її зрікається, щоб дати клятву народу нашому вірно служити, тільки йому одному і нашій рідній Україні, і не пожаліти живота свого заради її свободи, честі і незалежності.
