DINGANE'S SITUATION AFTER BLOOD RIVER
After the Battle of Blood River, Dingane worked on rebuilding his forces for the ongoing war on the Boers.
To get resources, he attempted to conquer the southern Swazi people of KwaNgwane but his Dlambedlu and Zinyosi regiments were defeated by the Swazis.
On 1 January 1839, Dingane asked his brother, Prince Mpande, to provide and lead his strongest Hlomendlini (home guards) regiment in the upcoming expeditions.
However, Mpande, tired of Dingane's executions and massacres, refused.
Frustrated by his army's defeat at Blood River and his failed Swazi campaigns, Dingane thought about forging closer ties with the British at Port Natal.
On 23 February 1839, Dingane's representatives met with Captain Jervis at the port. When Jervis pushed for peace talks with the Boers, they told him that Dingane was open to any terms the British might dictate for peace with the Boers, but he hoped that the English would assist him in driving the Boers out of the country.
The Boers’ Volksraad agreed to negotiations with Dingane but rejected British mediation.
