Alex Dyachenko's story: how a sailor of Ukrainian descent heroically proved himself in the US Army Alex Dyachenko was born on March 21, 1919, in Connecticut, USA, to Ukrainian immigrants. He spent his childhood and youth there. With the outbreak of World War II, Americans were in a high state of patriotism, and the Ukrainian diaspora was not far behind. On September 24, 1940, Alex volunteered for the Navy. He dreamed of an officer's career in the navy. Alex's ship patrolled the waters of the Atlantic, ensuring the passage of other ships, and also participated in operations near Morocco. In December 1942, the destroyer Erbeli, on which Alex served, was tasked with intercepting ships sailing between German and Japanese ports off the coast of Brazil. On March 10, 1943, the U.S. Navy discovered the German ship Karin, which could be carrying valuable cargo. The command was given to seize the German vessel. After the first warning shots were fired, the Karin stopped. Acting according to instructions, the German crew set fire to their ship and boarded the boats. The time was counting down to minutes. Fourteen volunteers, including Dyachenko, immediately set off by boat to the burning ship. The American sailors had to extinguish the fire, find and defuse explosive charges, restore the ship's buoyancy, and most importantly, find secret documents and equipment. They were also prepared for armed resistance from the Germans. Alex fought for the ship's survival in the engine room. Unfortunately, he and his comrades did not make it - several powerful explosions claimed the lives of seven heroes. Each of the seven fallen crew members of the Erbeli was awarded the Silver Star. Ships under construction for the US Navy were named in their honor. З початком Другої світової війни (далі — ДСВ), американці були в піднесеному й патріотичному настрої, українська діаспора не відставала. 24 вересня 1940 року Алекс зголосився добровольцем до ВМС. Він мріяв про офіцерську кар’єру на флоті. Корабель Алекса патрулював води Атлантики, забезпечуючи прохід інших суден, а також брав участь в операціях біля Марокко. У грудні 1942 року корабель "Ербелі", на якому служив Алекс, отримав завдання перехоплювати судна біля берегів Бразилії, які курсували між німецькими та японськими портами. 10 березня 1943-го ВМС США виявили німецький теплохід "Карін", де міг бути цінний вантаж. Була віддана команда захопити німецьке судно. Після перших попереджувальних пострілів "Карін" зупинився. Діючи за інструкцією, німецький екіпаж підпалив свій корабель та висадився на шлюпки. Відлік часу пішов на хвилини. Чотирнадцять добровольців, а серед них і Дяченко, негайно відправилися на баркасі до палаючого теплоходу. Американські моряки мали загасити пожежу, знайти і знешкодити вибухові заряди, відновити плавучість судна, і головне – відшукати таємні документи та апаратуру. Вони були готові також до збройного опору німців. Алекс боровся за живучість судна у машинному відділенні. На жаль, йому з товаришами не вистачило часу – кілька потужних вибухів забрали життя сімох героїв. Кожного із семи загиблих членів екіпажу "Ербелі" нагородили Срібною Зіркою. На їх честь отримали назви кораблі, що будувалися для флоту США.
