Mohammed preached Islam to common people in Mecca for more than a decade peacefully, but he didn't get any more than 100 converts.
Then he migrated to Medina, started looting caravans to get funds, and distributed captured women among his followers as sex slaves.
That was the masterstroke and people started joining his cult in droves.
