Marcel Petiot aka "Dr. Satan" was a French serial killer who during WW2 pretended to aid Jewish people attempting to flee Nazi occupied France.
At his home he gave them a "vaccine" which he told them would protect them from disease.
But what he was actually giving them was a poison that promptly killed them. He burned the bodies of his victims in his basement furnace.
He was convicted of multiple murders after the discovery of the remains of 23 people in the basement of his home.
He is suspected of the murder of about 60 to 200 victims during his lifetime, although the true number remains unknown.
Marcel Petiot, despite his criminal activities, was a man of many faces. He was not only a serial killer but also a physician and a politician. He had a medical degree and started practicing soon after. However, he earned a reputation for running illegal activities from his practice. He was also involved in politics for a period and became the mayor of his town.
Petiot’s criminal activities were not limited to his role as a serial killer. He was known for his involvement in various crimes throughout his life. For instance, at the age of 17, he was arrested for mail theft but was released after a judge determined that he was mentally unfit to stand trial. In 1917, while serving in the French army during World War I, he was tried for stealing army blankets but found not guilty by reason of insanity.
In addition to his notorious crimes during World War II, Petiot was also involved in a series of other criminal activities. After his crimes were discovered, he grew a beard and joined the police using the alias Captain Valeri. “Valeri” was assigned to find Petiot until someone recognized him, months later.
