In August 2004, Merrian Carver set out on a week-long Alaskan cruise — but just two days into the voyage, her steward noticed that she had vanished.
Her bed hadn't been slept in, though all of her belongings were still in her room. For the next five days straight, the steward reported Carver missing to his boss, who reportedly told him, "Just do your job and forget it."
When the cruise ended and crew members realized that all of Carver's belongings were still onboard, they simply packed them up and donated them to charity.
Cruise officials didn't secure her room, collect evidence, search the boat, or even contact authorities or notify Carver's family. When her father realized he couldn't get in touch with her, he reported her missing, but that was weeks after she'd disappeared.
To this day, she's never been seen again and her fate remains a complete mystery.
