Feminism is not about choice. Here’s why.
This is the narrative that we have been pushed about feminism for the longest time but I want to take a second to really look at this. We are told women should have the choice to do whatever we want, but is it really a choice when we are constantly presented with this narrative that there are things which are good choices and others which are not?
Here are a few examples
• It’s good to be a career woman, it is not as good to be a stay at home woman
• it’s good to be independent, it’s not good to depend on a man
• it’s good and empowering to be promiscuous, it’s prudish and silly to be abstinent.
• it’s good to dress however you want and be immodest, it’s bad to want to dress modestly
• it’s good to focus on career first, it’s not to focus on children and marriage
I could go on, but you get the point. Feminism acts like it gives equal moral weight to all options, but it obviously doesn’t and it can’t. Yes women are free to choose, but how much choice do you really have if when you go to vote there is only one option on the ballot? We would not call that freedom of choice, we would call that the illusion of choice - and that is what feminism is.
