Caliph Uthman was the first person to burn the Qurans. The original that Uthman supposedly possessed doesn't exist. All the Qurans that were burnt were still Qurans. The decision to burn the Qurans did not necessarily mean it was to preserve the original but rather to preserve the one that suited Uthman. There is the possibility that every region had its own version of the Quran and none were any truer than the other.
