Théophile Schuler (French painter, 1821-1878) Schuler's allegory was inspired by tragic events as well as depictions of the Dance of Death created in the Rhineland, especially Holbein's version. Schuler shows the impassive figure of death carrying away people from all social strata and all ages of life in his chariot drawn by his horses. After a single exhibition in Strasbourg in 1851, Schuler, who was fascinated by the mystical reputation of the former Dominican monastery of Unterlinden, decided to present his masterpiece at the Unterlinden Museum in 1862. 1848⠀⠀⠀
