Bet most of you never heard of Jack Lummus
In honor of Super Bowl weekend, we're recognizing Jack Lummus. Lummus gave up a football career with the New York Giants to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after the 1941 attack in Pearl Harbor. He had been a star multi-sport athlete in high school in football and track, and had earned a football scholarship to Baylor University. His athleticism was put to good use as a Marine Corps officer on the island of Iwo Jima in 1945. Under fire, Lummus advanced ahead of his men to take out three pillboxes, leading his men onwards until he stepped on a landmine. For his valor, he posthumously received the Medal of Honor.
